A 16-inch OLED laptop that is quick at nearly everything and completely honest about the one thing it cannot do. The graphics are the ceiling, and the rest of the machine clears it easily.

Why I keep coming back to 16 inches

Somewhere around my third 13-inch ultraportable I admitted something embarrassing. I was buying laptops for the airport and then using them at a desk, five days a week, plugged into a monitor I only bought because the laptop screen was too small to work on. That is a design failure, and it was mine, not the manufacturer’s.

So my rule for anything with a 16-inch panel is short. It has to earn the extra centimeters in the bag, and it has to earn them with the screen, because the screen is the only honest reason to carry a machine this size. Everything else about a 16-inch laptop is a compromise you accept in exchange for that.

ASUS kindly provided the unit I have been living with: a Vivobook S16, model M3607KA-A72BHDCB1, part number 90NB16T1-M00110, Matte Gray, 32GB of RAM and a terabyte of storage. That is the fullest configuration of the M3607KA, which is the AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 version of this chassis, and after putting it through everything I normally throw at a work machine, I have a clear view of who it is for and who should walk past it.

Configurations of the M3607 vary by market and the differences matter, so this is the one I tested, verified against the ASUS specification sheet rather than a retail listing.

Two lines in that table decide most of what follows: the 60Hz panel, and the fact that both USB-C ports run at 5Gbps.

Design and build quality

It is thin and it is solid, and those two things are harder to combine than the spec sheet suggests. At 1.59cm at the front edge and 1.70kg, the Vivobook S16 sits in the narrow band where a 16-inch laptop still feels like a laptop rather than a piece of furniture you carry. Pick it up by one corner and the chassis does not complain. Push on the lid and there is some give, as there is on almost every thin laptop, but nothing that reaches the panel.

The Matte Gray finish is the better of the two colors ASUS offers here, and the CNC-cut logo on the lid is the one piece of decoration on the whole machine. ASUS quotes MIL-STD 810H testing, which in practice means the thing has survived a laboratory shake table rather than a fall down a staircase, and I read it as a statement about panel gaps and hinge tolerances rather than as body armor. Those tolerances are good. The hinge holds any angle you set it to and does not bounce when you type.

The one thing I would change is the finish itself. It takes fingerprints across the deck and around the touchpad the way every soft metallic finish does, and on a dark gray machine you see them.

Setup and the first hour

Windows 11 Home ships preinstalled, and the first hour is mostly Windows removing its own excuses. Out-of-box setup, a long update cycle, a reboot, another update cycle. ASUS layers MyASUS, ScreenXpert, GlideX and StoryCube on top, along with a 30-day McAfee trial that I took off immediately, and the machine is noticeably better without it.

The setup work worth doing is inside MyASUS. Run the system update so the firmware and the AMD driver stack match, then go into Battery Health Charging and cap the charge at 80% if the laptop lives on a desk. Then check that OLED Care is active, because it defaults the system to dark mode and shortens screen-off timers, and on an OLED panel those settings are the difference between a screen that ages well and one that does not.

Some markets ship a wired optical mouse in the box, which is a strange inclusion on a machine with one of the better touchpads in this class. Mine went into a drawer.

The panel, and the two numbers ASUS would rather you skipped

Here is where I have to be honest, because the screen is the reason to buy a 16-inch laptop and this one is half brilliant.

The half that is brilliant is the OLED part. Contrast is quoted at 1,000,000:1 and behaves like it: black is black, not dark gray with a backlight behind it. Color coverage is 95% DCI-P3, response time is 0.2ms, and the panel carries TÜV Rheinland low blue light certification, so long editing sessions are easier on the eyes than the number suggests. In a dark room, watching anything on this screen is a pleasure that IPS panels in this class cannot match.

The half that is not brilliant is the two numbers ASUS keeps in the small print. The panel runs at 60Hz, and it peaks at 300 nits. On a screen with a 0.2ms response time, 60Hz is a waste of the technology, and after a few days you feel it every time you drag a window. The brightness is fine indoors and merely adequate next to a window on a bright afternoon, and on a glossy panel that matters more than it would on a matte one.

There is a third number nobody prints. At 1920×1200 across 16 inches you get roughly 142 pixels per inch, which is a lower density than a 14-inch 1080p laptop. Text is perfectly readable and a spreadsheet at 100% scaling is genuinely usable, which is the practical argument for this panel, but you see the pixel structure on thin fonts if you look for it. ASUS builds 2560×1600 144Hz IPS versions of this same chassis. That is the panel I would want, and it is not the panel that comes in this SKU.

Everyday speed

This is the part my rule about 16-inch laptops does not cover, and it is where the machine won me over. It is fast. Applications open almost the instant you click them, big project files load without the little pause you learn to expect, and I have not once caught it thinking.

The Ryzen AI 7 350 is a Krackan Point chip with eight cores split four Zen 5 and four Zen 5c, 16 threads, 24MB of cache, and a 5.0GHz peak. In Cinebench R23 the silicon lands around 1,800 to 1,950 in single core and between roughly 14,600 and 15,700 in multi core depending on the power envelope it is given. What that means in use: single-thread responsiveness is in the same territory as chips sold in far more expensive machines, which is exactly what you feel when applications launch, and sustained multi-core work is competitive with the previous generation of full-power Ryzen 7 parts rather than ahead of them.

The 35W total system TDP is the honest limit. Short bursts are quick and long renders settle down to something slower than the peak numbers suggest, which is the correct trade for a 1.70kg chassis and not a defect.

The 32GB of memory is the specification that makes this machine last. It arrives as 16GB soldered plus 16GB in the single SO-DIMM slot, which is also the ceiling: 32GB is as far as the platform goes. That is more than enough for what this laptop is for, and I would rather have it now than discover the limit in three years. The 1TB PCIe 4.0 drive fills the only M.2 slot, so storage upgrades mean replacement rather than addition. Taking the terabyte version at purchase is the right decision, and it is the one I would make every time.

Graphics, and the part that decides who this laptop is for

The Radeon 860M is the weak point of the machine and I am not going to dress it up.

The number that explains it is the compute unit count. The 860M gets 8 of the 16 RDNA 3.5 compute units the architecture allows, 512 shaders, boosting to around 3.0GHz for roughly 3.07 TFLOPS. For context, the Radeon 780M in the Ryzen 7 chips of two years ago had 12 compute units. AMD moved the naming up a generation and moved the hardware down a tier, and in the Ryzen AI 7 350 the graphics are the thing that got cut.

Memory makes it worse rather than better. This configuration uses DDR5 in a SO-DIMM slot rather than the soldered LPDDR5X you find on more expensive thin laptops, and an integrated GPU has no memory of its own: bandwidth from system RAM is the entire budget. Give the same silicon a 51W power envelope in a desktop mini PC and it holds around 57fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p on the Low preset with FSR in balanced mode. In a 35W laptop chassis that has to feed eight CPU cores from the same power budget, you get less than that.

So the practical position: esports titles, indie games, and anything a few years old will run properly at 1200p. Modern AAA games run, at low settings, at 1080p, with FSR doing the heavy lifting, and you will spend more time in the graphics menu than in the game. This is not a gaming laptop and buying it as one would be a mistake. What it is instead is a laptop where the GPU is enough to keep Windows, video, and a browser with thirty tabs smooth, which is what an integrated GPU is actually for.

Thermals and noise

Thirty-five watts inside a 1.59cm chassis has to go somewhere, and ASUS handles it about as well as the physics allow. Office work, browsing and video are effectively silent, and the deck stays cool where your wrists rest.

Push it with a sustained load and the fan makes itself known. It is a clean sound rather than a whine, which matters more than the volume, and MyASUS gives you fan profiles including a Whisper mode that trades a slice of sustained performance for silence. On a machine that will spend most of its life doing light work, leaving it on Standard and letting the Performance profile exist for the days you need it is the sensible setup. Under load the area above the keyboard gets warm, as it does on every thin laptop with a 35W chip in it, and your hands are not there.

Keyboard, touchpad and the parts you touch

The keyboard is one of the best things about the machine and one of the reasons a 16-inch laptop is worth carrying. Key pitch is a full-size 19.05mm, key travel is 1.7mm, and the keycaps are dished 0.2mm to catch your fingertips. It is quiet, the backlight is even, and I can write on it for a full working day without the fatigue that shallow ultraportable keyboards produce.

The compromise is the number pad. On a 16-inch deck ASUS had room for one and used it, which pushes the main typing block left of center. If you touch type with the screen centered you will feel your hands sitting slightly off, and it took me a while to stop noticing. Whether that is a gift or an irritation depends entirely on whether you enter numbers for a living.

The touchpad is large, coated to shed fingerprints, and clicks with 0.23mm of depth, which sounds like a trivial specification until you use a laptop with less. Gestures are reliable and accidental palm activations were not a problem.

The FHD camera is a genuine step up from the 720p sensors that still ship on plenty of laptops this size, it has IR for Windows Hello face login that works quickly and in poor light, and there is a physical shutter that slides across the lens. Speakers are the usual thin-laptop story: loud enough, clear in the mids, and with nothing below about 150Hz. Fine for a call or a YouTube video, not for music you care about.

Connectivity, and one decision I do not understand

Port selection is generous and correct: two USB-C, two USB-A, full-size HDMI 2.1 and a 3.5mm combo jack. No dongles for a monitor, a mouse and a drive, which is the whole argument for a 16-inch chassis being made properly.

The speed of those ports is the problem. Both USB-C ports run USB 3.2 Gen 1, which is 5Gbps, a hard ceiling of about 600MB/s before protocol overhead. The Ryzen AI 300 platform supports USB4 at 40Gbps. ASUS did not use it. That means a fast external NVMe drive will run at a fraction of what it is capable of, an external GPU enclosure is out of the question, and DisplayPort 1.2 rather than 1.4 puts a limit on what you can drive on a high-refresh external monitor. On a 2026 machine built around a Ryzen AI chip, that is the decision I would push back on hardest.

Wireless is the same story in a smaller key. Wi-Fi 6 with a 2×2 antenna and Bluetooth 5.3 are perfectly fine and will remain fine for years. They are also a generation behind what a machine specified this well should ship with, and anyone who has already upgraded to a Wi-Fi 7 router at home will notice the gap.

Battery life

The 70Wh cell is the largest thing in the chassis and it does the job. ASUS quotes up to 23 hours, and that figure deserves a footnote it does not get on the box: it was measured on the M3607GA variant with a different processor and half the memory, running a 1080p video loop with Wi-Fi switched off and the screen at 150 cd/m². Retail listings for this AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 configuration quote up to 19 hours, which is closer.

What you get in real work is a full day away from a socket with mixed browsing, documents and video calls, provided you are not asking the GPU for anything. The OLED panel helps here in a way LCD machines cannot, because dark mode genuinely draws less power on a panel that switches pixels off. Push the brightness up and run something demanding and it drains like any other thin laptop, quickly.

Charging is over USB-C at 65W, which means the laptop takes the same charger as a phone and a tablet, and ASUS quotes 60% in 49 minutes. One brick in the bag instead of three is worth more on a trip than an extra hour of runtime.

The NPU, and what the AI badge actually buys you

This is a Copilot+ PC with a 50 TOPS XDNA neural processor, and the honest accounting is that most of what it enables is a rounding error while a small part of it earns its place every day.

The useful part is the camera and microphone processing. Windows Studio Effects for background blur, framing and eye contact correction, plus the ASUS AI noise cancellation, all run on the NPU instead of taxing the CPU, and on a machine that does a lot of video calls that is a real difference in both quality and battery. Live Captions with translation is the other feature I would miss.

The rest of the Copilot+ package, Recall in preview, image generation in Photos, Cocreator in Paint, is optional and I treat it as optional. Buy this laptop for the processor, the memory and the screen. If the AI features grow into something you use daily, the silicon is already there waiting, and that is the correct way around.

Warranty, and which configuration to buy

The label on my unit is printed with 36 months of warranty. Cover on this machine varies by market, so check what your own region actually gets rather than assuming, but where three years is what ASUS offers it beats most of the competition as standard. On a laptop you intend to keep, that third year matters more than half the spec sheet does.

Then there is the question of which box to take home. The configuration immediately below this one, the M3607KA-A72AOHCB1, is the same processor and the same 32GB of memory with a 512GB drive. The single M.2 slot is already occupied and the SO-DIMM slot is full, so the smaller box locks you into a storage replacement later rather than an upgrade, and getting there means opening the machine and reinstalling Windows. Take the terabyte version at purchase and the question never comes up.

That is the whole argument for this SKU. There are laptops with sharper, faster panels, and there are laptops with USB4. What is hard to find in a single box is 32GB of RAM, a terabyte of PCIe 4.0 storage, a 16-inch OLED, a keyboard this good, a 70Wh battery and three years of cover. That is the trade this machine asks you to make, and for the way most people actually work, it is a good one.

Verdict

The Vivobook S16 does the thing I most want a work laptop to do, which is get out of the way. It is quick, it opens everything instantly, the screen is a pleasure in a dark room, the keyboard is excellent, and after weeks of daily use the build has not developed a single rattle. The 32GB and the terabyte are the specifications that will keep it feeling like this in three years, and they are the reason this configuration is the right one.

The flaws are real and they are specific. A 60Hz, 300-nit panel on a machine whose main selling point is its screen is a shortcut, and 5Gbps USB-C on a platform that supports USB4 is a shortcut too. The Radeon 860M is the weakest part of the AMD chip it lives in, and anyone buying this to play current games at anything above low settings has misread the product.

Buy it if you want one large, fast, quiet machine for work, study and everything that is not a modern AAA game, and you would rather have 32GB and a terabyte now than a sharper screen. Skip it if you live off high-speed external drives, if you want a high-refresh panel to look at all day, or if gaming is anywhere on your list. I would buy this one, and I would buy it in exactly this configuration.
