The cable in the door pocket

For years I kept a charging cable coiled in the door pocket of my car, because every phone I owned needed one. I have wanted a phone that simply sits on a magnetic pad and charges while I drive, without me fishing around at a red light. The Pixel 11 Pro XL is that phone, and the strange part is that getting what I asked for taught me exactly where its limits are.

That is the shape of this whole review. Google has built a device that does a handful of things better than anything else on sale, and has quietly walked backward on a few others while nobody was looking. The camera is superb. The screen is the brightest I have put in front of my face. The chip is fast in the places you notice and slow in the places benchmark charts care about. Whether that adds up depends entirely on what you actually do with a phone, so let me be specific about all of it.

The whole Pixel 11 family, and where the XL sits

Google announced four phones on August 12, and they went on sale August 20. Understanding the XL means understanding what it sits against inside its own family.

The Pixel 11 is the entry point, sold here in 256GB and 512GB configurations. It gets a 6.3in OLED panel at 1080 x 2424 running to 120Hz and 3,000 nits peak, a 48-megapixel main sensor with 56% more light sensitivity than the Pixel 10, a 13-megapixel ultrawide, and a 10.8-megapixel 5x telephoto that reaches 30x Super Zoom. Its battery is the odd surprise of the range at 4,985mAh, larger than the one inside the Pixel 11 Pro above it. What it gives up is real: a non-LTPO panel, Wi-Fi 6E instead of Wi-Fi 7, no ultra-wideband, 4K video instead of 8K, and 12GB of RAM with no option to go higher.

The Pixel 11 Pro shares the XL’s entire camera system, its chip, and its 3,600-nit Super Actua panel, shrunk to 6.3in at 1280 x 2856. It carries a 4,850mAh cell and charges at 30W. At 204g it is the one I would hand to anyone who has ever complained that flagships got too big.

The Pixel 11 Pro XL adds a 6.8in panel, a 5,115mAh battery, and 45W wired charging. That is the entire difference. Google has stopped using size to gate features, which is the right call and also leaves the XL with less to argue for itself than it used to have.

The fourth phone, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, is not sold officially in Portugal at all. It folds out to an 8in Super Actua Flex panel at 2076 x 2152, carries a 4,806mAh cell that charges to about 50% in 30 minutes on 30W, and ships with 16GB of RAM at every storage tier. Its cameras are the compromise: a 48-megapixel main sensor, a 10.5-megapixel ultrawide, and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto that stops at 30x. Its absence from Portuguese shelves is a smaller loss than it sounds.

Design, materials, and a camera bar that finally lies flat

The satin aluminum frame is the best thing Google has done with a Pixel body. It is cool to the touch, it does not read as slippery the way polished stainless does, and the matte Obsidian finish resists fingerprints in a way the glossier colors do not.

The real change is the camera bar. Google reduced its thickness by 40% compared to earlier base-model Pixels and ran edge-to-edge glass across it, so the housing now sits close enough to the rear panel that the phone stops rocking on a desk. Put a Made by Google case on it and the bump effectively disappears. That sounds like a small thing until you have spent a couple of generations tapping out messages on a phone that wobbles.

At 226g it is heavy, and the 8.5mm depth means it fills a pocket. I do not mind either. What I do notice is that the Pro XL is fractionally smaller in every dimension than the Pixel 10 Pro XL it replaces, which is a rare direction of travel and shows up as thinner bezels rather than a smaller screen.

Setup and the first hour

Open the box and you get the phone and a one-meter USB-C to USB-C cable rated at USB 2.0. There is no power adapter. The 45W unit is not included, and since every charging figure the company quotes assumes that exact adapter, you will not see those numbers until you have one.

Transfer is genuinely quick. Wired or wireless migration from an older Android device pulls across photos, messages, and the eSIM without the eSIM dance that used to eat twenty minutes at a carrier counter. Coming from an iPhone works too, and Quick Share now talks to AirDrop directly, which removes one of the last real frictions of living in a mixed household.

Boot time is short and app launches are immediate from the first session, before any adaptive learning has kicked in. Google quotes 15% quicker app launches and 25% faster web browsing against the Tensor G5, and those are the two figures that match what the phone feels like in the hand.

The Super Actua display

Google claims 3,600 nits peak, measured at a 5% on-pixel ratio, which is a lab condition rather than a real one. The number that matters is the 2,877 nits this panel actually produces under test, making it the brightest phone display currently sold. For context, the iPhone 17 Pro Max manages 1,281 nits and the Galaxy S26 Ultra reaches 1,806.

In August in Portugal, that difference is not academic. Direct midday sun on a café terrace is where phone screens go to die, and this one stays legible. The LTPO panel scales from 1Hz to 120Hz, so the always-on display draws almost nothing, and the new anti-scratch coating more than doubles the scratch resistance of the Pixel 10 Pro.

Two honest caveats. There is no anti-reflective layer of the kind Samsung now ships, so brightness is doing all the work against glare rather than sharing it with optics. More seriously, Google continues to use low-frequency PWM dimming, and if you are among the people who get headaches or eye strain from flickering panels at low brightness, this display will affect you exactly as its predecessors did. Google has had years to address that and has not.

The camera system, from 0.5x to 120x

The main sensor is a new 50-megapixel unit at 1/1.3in with an f/1.7 aperture, and it produces the finest detail I have seen from a Pixel. Google leaves a little grain in the image rather than smearing it away, which gives files a filmic quality that holds up when you crop. Color is slightly restrained compared to the Pixel 10 Pro, and whether you read that as accuracy or as flatness is a matter of taste.

The two rebuilt cameras are the ultrawide and the telephoto, and the telephoto is where the real work went. It is a 48-megapixel periscope at 106mm with a 1/1.95in sensor, 30% more light sensitive than before, holding 5x optically and offering what Google describes as optical quality at 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 5x, and 10x. Portrait mode now works at 5x, which is the single most useful addition for anyone who shoots people.

Then there is Pro Zoom at 120x. I went in expecting a marketing number and came out using it more than I expected. Pushed to the limit it is a generative reconstruction rather than a photograph, and Google’s own footnote admits results vary by camera, app, and mode. It is still the best long-zoom implementation on any phone, cleaner and better colored than Samsung’s 100x even before AI processing enters the picture. At 10x it is simply excellent and needs no asterisk.

Low light has changed character. Instant Night Sight cuts capture down to roughly two seconds against the three to six the Pixel 10 Pro needed, and that one second decides whether a moving subject is a photograph or a smear. Portrait shots have finally shed the digital noise and edge artifacts that dogged Pixels for several generations, and the 42-megapixel selfie camera no longer produces the over-compressed look of last year. Video tops out at 8K at 30fps with 10-bit HDR throughout.

Magic Capture, and why it is the reason to buy this phone

Every year a phone maker attaches the word “magic” to something forgettable. This is the exception.

Start a Magic Capture session and the phone analyzes almost 400 frames of whatever is in front of it, then hands back a short video plus a curated set of stills chosen for the moment rather than the shutter press. Opt in and it will crop, straighten, and unblur where it helps. It catches the laugh, the jump, the candle going out.

What makes it work is that it removes the thing that ruins photographing children, dogs, and anyone under five: the timing. You stop being the person crouched behind a phone waiting for the shot and go back to being present at the event. Burst mode never solved this because burst mode still made you responsible for the moment. Magic Capture takes the responsibility away.

It is Tensor G6 exclusive, which is the clearest argument Google has made in years for why its own silicon exists. The chip’s 50% larger TPU is what makes the on-device frame analysis viable at all. If you photograph a family, this feature alone justifies the upgrade, and I do not say that lightly.

Tensor G6: fast where it counts, capped where it does not

The Tensor G6 is a 3nm part with an unusual 7-core arrangement, one Arm C1-Ultra core at 4.1GHz, four C1-Pro cores at 3.4GHz, and two more at 2.65GHz. In use the phone is quick. Everything opens instantly, the camera app is ready before you are, and the vapor chamber keeps sustained work from turning the frame uncomfortable.

The generational jump is real on the CPU side. Geekbench 6 puts this phone at 2,713 single-core and 7,453 multi-core against the Pixel 10 Pro XL’s 2,322 and 6,286. The AI numbers moved further, from 4,387 to 9,349 on Geekbench AI, which is roughly a doubling.

Now the honest part. Graphics went backward. The PowerVR GPU scores 3,249 in 3DMark Wildlife Extreme Unlimited at an average 19.46fps, where last year’s Pro XL managed 3,462 and 20.73fps. It still does not support the latest Vulkan API, so games that lean on it, Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals setting being the obvious example, render with reduced effects. Against a Galaxy S26 Ultra at 6,645, this is not a close fight.

For everything I actually play, and for every camera, mapping, and Gemini task I threw at it, none of that registered. If you play graphically demanding 3D titles for hours at a stretch, it will, and you should buy something else.

HiLight: a good idea, shipped early

HiLight is a ring of colored LEDs built around the rear flash, reserved for the Pro models and absent from the standard Pixel 11. Leave the phone face down and it glows: a distinct pattern when Gemini is listening, thinking, or answering, and one of five colors you assign to starred contacts when they call.

I like it more than I expected to. Putting the phone face down on a table is the closest thing we have to a social contract about attention, and HiLight lets you honor it without missing the one call that matters. The Gemini states are genuinely useful, because you can tell whether the assistant is still working without waking the screen.

What it is not, yet, is finished. Two triggers is a thin feature set. Message notifications from favorite contacts are on Google’s roadmap rather than on the phone, and there is no meaningful customization beyond picking colors from a fixed set. Nothing’s Glyph interface has been doing more than this for years. Judge HiLight on what it does today, not what the roadmap promises, and it is a pleasant extra rather than a reason to choose this phone.

Android 17, Gemini, and seven years of support

Android 17 ships clean, and the seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates remain the strongest support commitment in the industry. On a phone you intend to keep for years, that promise is a meaningful part of what you are getting.

Beyond Magic Capture, three additions earn their place. Rambler rebuilds voice typing in Gboard so it strips verbal filler automatically, distinguishes dictation from commands, and edits text you already wrote. Live Translate handles video in real time, currently on YouTube only, and preserves enough vocal character to avoid sounding like a robot. Creator Suite puts a script on screen while you record and adds editing tools around it.

The awkward truth is that Rambler and several Gemini features are reaching other Android phones too, which erodes the specifically-Pixel case. And Gemini’s proactive layer, the part that is meant to anticipate what you need, remains more promise than practice. Buying this phone for Gemini alone is buying an intention.

Google also trimmed the bundled Google AI Pro subscription from a year to six months, with three months of YouTube Premium alongside it.

Connectivity

Wi-Fi 7 tri-band, Bluetooth 6.0 with aptX HD, ultra-wideband, and USB-C 3.2 cover everything I connect to. Positioning uses dual-band GPS with L1 and L5, which is why walking directions in the tight streets of Porto’s Ribeira stopped guessing. Satellite SOS is included for the first two years.

The modem is new this generation, and reception is unremarkable. It is neither better nor worse than the Pixel 10 in the places where signal gets thin. The ultrasonic under-display fingerprint reader is fast and works with wet fingers, which optical readers still struggle with.

Battery life and the charging question

The 5,115mAh cell is smaller than the one in the Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Google’s answer is that Tensor G6 is efficient enough to cover the difference. Broadly it is. The phone holds 14 hours and 28 minutes of continuous 5G web browsing, against 14 hours and 10 minutes for last year’s model. Its EU energy label rates it at 50 hours and 10 minutes of endurance across 1,000 cycles.

In practice that is a comfortable full day with the screen doing real work, and a day and a half if you are gentler with it. It is also short of a Galaxy S26 Ultra at 16 hours 10 minutes and well short of an iPhone 17 Pro Max at 17 hours 54 minutes.

Charging is where I have to break with Google’s own marketing. The company advertises 75% in 30 minutes with its 45W adapter. Measured, this phone reaches 27% in 15 minutes and 54% in 30. The Pixel 10 Pro XL managed 33% and 63% on the same test. Charging got slower, not faster, and the marketing says the opposite.

Which brings me back to my car. Pixelsnap wireless is genuinely excellent, 25W over Qi2.2, magnetically aligned, and 29% quicker than last year, and it has changed how I use the phone on the road. Use it for the convenience, for the overnight top-up, for the drive. When you actually need charge in a hurry, take the cable. The gap between the two is wider than the numbers suggest, and bypass charging while you drive means the battery is not cycling needlessly. That is the setup I have settled on and the one I would recommend.

Which configuration to get, and where to get it

Three configurations reach Portugal: 256GB with 12GB of RAM, 512GB with 16GB, and 1TB with 16GB. Choosing between them is the real decision, and it is not the one Google’s marketing prepares you for.

The entry configuration ships with 12GB of RAM where the Pixel 10 Pro XL carried 16GB. That reduction lands in exactly the wrong place. RAM is what feeds on-device AI, and the more of it a phone has, the more Gemini and Magic Capture can do without handing your data to a server and waiting for an answer. The outcome is a base model that is the worst-equipped member of the range for the feature set the whole phone is built to sell. Google is not the only manufacturer trimming memory this year, and the industry-wide squeeze on supply is real, but the consequence for the buyer is the same either way. If you want this device for Gemini and Magic Capture, take the 512GB version and its 16GB. That is the configuration that matches the advertising.

Storage itself matters less than it used to now that 256GB is the floor across the range, though the 512GB and 1TB tiers add Zoned UFS, which is quicker under load. Color choice is Canyon, Fog, Olive, or the matte Obsidian, and the matte finish is the one that stays clean.

Everything goes on sale August 20 through Google Store Portugal, Worten, FNAC, Darty, and Vodafone. The Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, and Pixel 11 Pro XL are all stocked here. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is not, so if a foldable Pixel is what you came for, you will be importing it.

Verdict

Google made a confident phone and then made it harder to love. The camera system is the best on any Android device, Magic Capture is the most useful photographic feature I have used in years, and the display and the aluminum frame put it in genuinely first-rate company. Set against that: less RAM than last year’s model, charging that measurably regressed, a GPU that has been the weak link for three generations running, and an LED on the back that shipped before it was ready.

The score reflects a phone I reach for happily every day while knowing precisely what it gives up. That is a good place for a flagship to land, and a better one than the spec sheet predicts.

Buy the Pixel 11 Pro XL if you photograph people and want the biggest, brightest screen Google makes, and buy the 512GB version so the AI features have room to breathe. Buy the Pixel 11 Pro instead if you want the same cameras in a body you can use one-handed.
